As we begin to study the book of Galatians with a historical, Hebraic perspective, we are immediately confronted with the topic of circumcision. Paul seems to have something else in mind when referring to being circumcised; after all, why would he say that the new believers were to be circumcised and keep the Law? After all, isn't circumcision a commandment within the Law? In Paul's day, the act of being circumcised meant much more than simply fulfilling the commandment. When this book was written, being circumcised meant becoming a Jew. Paul was letting the Galatians know that they did not have to become Jewish in order to serve this Jewish Messiah! Their salvation was a free gift, given to all who would become disciples of Yeshua, Jesus. As we will see, Paul also expected these new believers to observe God's Law (Torah)... but not as a way of salvation. Paul expected the Galatians to observe the Torah (Law) for the same reason he did... because he was saved. If you have never heard these things taught before, I encourage you to check out everything being said here. You will be amazed at how the scriptures come alive when they are put back into their proper context. May the Lord bless you and keep you, Shabbat shalom!
